"Vita nel pomeriggio" is the story of a journey into the world of bullfighting, following the famous matador Sébastien Castella. In the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway, the author retraces her own "brave summer" by traveling with the renowned torero during the "Semana Grande" in Bilbao, amidst bullfights and celebrations, encountering characters and places from the ancient and fascinating world of the corrida. Together with Sébastien Castella, she explores from the inside the rituals, dynamics, and rules of bullfighting. She delves into its psychology, experiencing the mood swings, whims, tension, strategies, and tactics of matadors, banderilleros, and picadores. She learns about the criteria for breeding, selecting, and training the animals—both bulls and horses. She lives the liturgical moment of the matador’s dressing ritual, describing Fermin’s atelier in Madrid and the importance of the "traje de luces" ("suit of lights") that enhances the torero's figure. On her journey with Castella, the author also meets and interviews banderillero José Chacón, Mozo de Espada Daniel Rosado, El Cid, Lea Vicens, and many others—revealing challenges and motivations, bonds and rivalries, competitions and passions that drive the main characters of the arena.
